about

I wrote "Madeleine" separate from the other backer album songs, both as a reflection of Amal El-Mohtar's short story "Madeleine" and on the nature of long-distance friendship, which has its tricks and pitfalls.

That song was just sitting on my blog since 2015, gathering dust. So I swooped it up, presented it to my brother, and asked him to help me figure out the chords.

Amal's story was published by Lightspeed Magazine in June 2015, and can be found online at: www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/madeleine/

lyrics

Madeleine, where are you going?
Madeleine, where you have you been?
Madeleine, what are you looking for?
Where are you going?

Madeleine, I see you standing there
Is this present or is this past?
Madeleine, what does it matter?
Our love here is meant to last

Touch me, my distant Madeleine
Come, open up your glass
Touch me, is this a memory?
I hear you laughing

Madeleine, I know you’re grieving
Your heart’s so wild and sore
Madeleine, you have a friend in me
I’m your friend forevermore

Madeleine, Madeleine
Hold me
And I’ll find you
I will find you
On the other side of dreaming
